49 MPs put their names in the hat for a job in the Shadow Cabinet. At least six must be women, and there is one notable exception: David Miliband. Former Cabinet ministers who also chose not to stand included Bob Ainsworth, Jack Straw, Alistair Darling and of course, Gordon Brown. The Shadow Cabinet is decided by Labour MPs, and the nineteen most popular candidates will be allocated positions by Ed Miliband and Harriet Harman, the leader and deputy leader, who already have their positions.
